The Oil Pump Performance Testing Machine is a universal test stand capable of completing performance testing on automotive engine oil and transmission oil pumps. Its unique design allows for almost any OEM or “black box” design oil pump to be mounted and subjected to testing for engine or transmission requirements such as drive speed, line oil pressures, line oil flows and oil temperatures. The machine tests a variety of variables in order to determine the expected product life before the oil pump goes into production.
As the mechanical design engineer for the project, Miro was asked to design an oil pump performance testing machine that would be capable of testing any automotive engine oil pump or transmission oil pump, and be better and easier to use than the old testing machine that the company had been using. He succeeded to such as degree that five years later when there was a need to add a hydraulic cabinet, the operators did not want to change anything else.
Miro’s design improvements included:
Easy motor alignment
– One of the engineering challenges that had to be addressed involved the 40 HP motor, which attaches to the unit via several couplers that must be perfectly aligned. On the old machine this involved a lot of time-consuming adjustments. Miro designed things so that everything is in alignment by design. It is not possible to misalign the motor, and no adjustments are needed.
Almost no down time in between samples
– Another issue was that the machine was in demand 24/7. However, after speaking with the technicians who operate the machine, Miro learned that flushing out the oil to thoroughly clean the machine in between oil samples was an 8-hour process. Although the project specs did not mention this issue, Miro’s design addressed it, by putting the oil in a removable cart and specifying that one extra cart be built. This way there’s always a cart available for use when another cart is being flushed out and cleaned.
2 extra carts designed and modeled by Bluming Inc. for Tesma’s Oil Pump Performance Test Machine. Each cart contains a pump with different oil, varieties of engine and transmission oils. Having multiple carts allows for quick change of oils for testing, which is beneficial to any testing facility.
